The Beta Chair is a redesign of one of my own designs. In 2010, I had designed the Alpha Chair, a chair made of folded sheet steel, and three years later I wanted to develop a version made of aluminium.
The seat of the chair consists of a single piece of aluminium sheet that is cut and milled by a CNC machine. This opens up the possibility to make complex folds that could not be achieved on an ordinary sheet metal bender.
The chair is designed for outdoor use, it is stackable, and with its 2.8 kg a real lightweight.
By riveting the legs to the seat, a formal and constructive unity is created.
The prototypes were developed in collaboration with the London-based company Robofold. The company specializes in folding aluminium sheets with the help of industrial robots.
